Premium - Limited Lifetime Warranty. Show More. Show Less. One of the ironies about the Chevrolet Aveo is that Chevrolet touted it as 'An American Revolution' - but the vehicle was actually a rebadged Daewoo, manufactured in South Korea. That said, it's cheap to own and cheap to drive, with fuel consumption averaging about 27 miles per gallon in the city and 36 on the open road. The Italian-designed coachwork isn't too hard on the eyes, and there is a surprising amount of interior room for a compact economy car. Some model years are prone to timing belt failure around 70,000 miles, but if you can live with that, it's not a bad little ride for the money.
As the Daewoo Kalos, the vehicle that would ultimately become known as the Chevrolet Aveo made its debut in 2001. However, it was not available in the U.S.
Except for the timing belt issue (admittedly, this is a major repair), it was generally reliable, had most of the features that drivers expect, and allows occupants to travel in a fair amount of comfort. However, performance and handling left something to be desired; the best that could be said about the driving the Aveo is that it is an 'uninspiring' experience. It is small wonder that Chevrolet has replaced the Aveo with the Sonic. During the its first four years on the U.S. Automotive market, the only engine available was a 1.6-liter four banger, generating a mere 103 horsepower. Eventually, that was increased to 108, coupled with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.
It was a bit short on trunk space, but a split-folding rear seat expanded cargo space to 42 cubic feet. While it wasn't the most appealing subcompact vehicle on the market during its production run, a pre-owned Aveo can be an excellent value for someone who is just looking for a basic, economical, no-frills way to get from Point A to Point B. If you can deal with the mediocre acceleration and handling, it's not a bad buy. You might want to consider the automatic transmission, however; manual shift models tend to have a sub-par gear shift. It's also recommended that you buy a 2006 model or later, as these have side airbags as well as amenities such as cruise control. Avoid the 2004 and 2005 models if possible, as these were the ones that had timing belt issues.
As for parts, these are still readily available from a variety of sources. For maintenance and repair related to ordinary wear and tear, consider aftermarket components, as these are often an improvement over the original OEM Chevy Aveo parts. For the best pricing, check out online supplies such as PartsGeek.com, which don't have many of the overhead costs associated with brick-and-mortar stores, and are able to pass the savings along to the customer.
